Topology Optimization
When back-of-the-envelope and even sophisticated closed-form calculation approaches no longer provide satisfactory solution confidence and design guidance, Finite Element Analysis can help take a project to the next level. I3E offers comprehensive FEA services. Below are a few animation examples illustrating some areas of FEA simulation capability.
Coupled Fluid-Structure
Explicit Dynamics
Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation is another high end area of support I3E offers to customers. Areas of support include traditional momentum, heat, and mass transfer analysis but also two phase flow Lagrangian droplet dispersion and evaporation, phase change (e.g. thermal energy storage systems), chemically reacting systems, every angle of heat transfer, and solid to fluid interactions. Some sample outputs are shown below.
EGR valve flow
Fuel Injector Exit Total Pressure
Ignition, Flame Propagation and Extinction
Conjugate HT Solid/Fluid
Plate Heat Exchanger Mesh
SOFC Cell Temperature Distribution
I3E has experience in generating models to investigate the interactions of systems and subsystems. The example on the left shows an early solid oxide fuel cell system and the calculated simple system efficiency versus stack fuel utilization.
In the example below we see catalytically controlled chemical fuel reforming reactions and the subsequent whole fuel reformer system model with a comparison against test data.
